Ueno has many museums, but the National Museum of Western Art,Tokyo is accessible and is a 1-minute walk from JR Ueno Station (park exit). The admission fee is also reasonable, and the permanent exhibition is free for high school students and younger. When I visit Ueno, I would definitely like to stop by. Le Corbusier's architecture can only be seen here in Japan. Once you step into the simple, modern building, the world of art is spread out before you. There are many Western works of art that make you feel as if you've entered a European museum. (Photo courtesy of The National Museum of Western Art,Tokyo)
There are no walls in the entrance of the first floor, and the building is only supported by pillars. This is a style called "Piroti", which is also a feature of Le Corbusier architecture, and by eliminating the walls, a sense of unity between the inside and outside of the building is created. On the first floor of the main building, the 19th century hall mainly has displays of sculptures by Auguste Rodin. Soft natural light pours in from the ceiling of the atrium, and the atmosphere is open and comfortable. You can climb up a gentle slope to the second floor, so you can enjoy the changing scenery while looking at the work. (Photo courtesy of The National Museum of Western Art,Tokyo)
On the second floor, the atmosphere changes dramatically from the first floor, and paintings by famous painters are displayed along the walls. The works of art are organized chronologically: first, paintings from the 14th to 16th centuries, then paintings from the 17th century, and finally 18th-century paintings, so you can enjoy a world of paintings that change with the times♪ (Photo courtesy of The National Museum of Western Art,Tokyo)
On the second floor of the new building, as you progress to the 19th-century paintings, you will find a calming space lined with works by the famous painter Monet. You can enjoy art that is both a little different from that of the main building, and is closer to the art of the present day. (Photo courtesy of The National Museum of Western Art,Tokyo)
