One of the lesser known places to enjoy Kyoto's famous autumn scenery, you're guaranteed to feel a sense of history and of the seasons in the enormous grounds.

One of the highlights of the grounds, and the oldest of the several halls at this temple: the "amidado".

The "Orokunokata" bell tower, one of the three main temple bells in Kyoto, built in 1623 by Tokugawa Ieyasu.

"Shiun Teien" (the purple cloud garden), created in 2006 to commemorate approximately 800 years since Saint Honen founded the temple.

When visiting, you can enjoy a view of the entire city from the temple gates.

The fresh Yuzen pork meal (¥3,500), once also enjoyed by the shinsengumi (special police force organised by the Bakufu military government).

Kyoto Shugo Shokuzen (¥4,500): made using traditional local vegetables that were lovingly cultivated in Mibu, where the Shinsengumi once was.
