The east garden, with its deep red cherry blossoms, is famous for having featured in Tanizaki Junichiro's novel "The Makioka Sisters" (Japanese: "Sasameyuki").
In April, the Japanese weeping cherry trees are lit up with fairy lights, entirely transforming the scenery as night falls.
During the summer, you can enjoy around 2,000 Japanese irises of around 200 varieties in the west garden's White Tiger pond.
Enjoy the water lilies in the Azure Dragon pond and the White Tiger pond from the middle of May to the beginning of September.
Until the giant torii archway was built in 1928, the Ōten-mon gate was the entrance to Heian Jingu.
