Chion-in Temple

Chion-in temple is located in Higashiyama-ku, where Hōnen (1133-1212), a Buddhist priest, spent the majority of the latter half of his life.
Most of the enormous temple buildings were constructed during the Edo period, and were designated as national treasures in 2002.
Take a moment to relax and enjoy shōjin ryōri, Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, for lunch (reservation required).

3.3 meters in height, 2.8 meters in diameter, and weighing 70 tons, Chion-in's hanging bell is one of the largest in Japan!

Higashiyama's spring water and the dry landscape garden that together make up this famous Showa era garden. The autumn leaves of Yūzen-en garden are also spectacular.
