A taste of Otaru: everything from shopping to sweet treats to making your own glass souvenirs!

Sakai Machi's Shopping Street is a popular attraction right next to the Otaru Canal.
The street was once a national highway that contributed to the town's prosperity from the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa period, and to this day the shops and western-style houses are reminiscent of that era. In addition to the classical, western-style buildings there are also plenty of retro, Japanese style houses; you can have lots of fun just walking around and taking it all in! Now they have been repurposed as glassware shops and western sweet shops, and the unique shops that line the street are bustling with visitors.
Most of the shops close around 18:00 in the summer, and around 17:00 in the winter, so make sure to have a wander down while it's still bright out.
It's not just about enjoying shopping and trying new sweets; there are workshops where you can make glassware yourself, as well as sushi and seafood restaurants unique to Otaru. Don't miss out!
