Kennin-ji Temple<

Kennin-ji Temple

Founded in 1202 by head priest Eisai, Kennin-ji Temple is the oldest zen Buddhist temple in all of Kyoto! As part of the five mountain temples of Kyoto, it was historically controlled by the shogunate, and was one of the paragons of zen Buddhism charged with spreading the system throughout Japan in times past.

Kennin-ji Temple not only has a beautiful zen garden, but also houses many historic artworks, such as folding screens featuring fujin and raijin (the gods of wind and thunder). There is even a relatively new masterpiece - the "Twin Dragons", by Koizumi Junsaku, which was painted in commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the founding of Kennin-ji! You can even join in on meditation sessions and get a bit closer to your own enlightenment!
